Thomas “Tom” P. Hilkens, 82 of Erie, MI, died peacefully in his home on Wednesday, June 4, 2014. Born August 9, 1931 in Toledo, OH, he was the son of William and Elsie (Clare) Hilkens. He married Flo Burgard on April 23, 1955. Tom was employed by the Dana Corporation (Spicer Division) in Toledo for 33 years, retiring in 1988. He was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Erie where he had served as usher and was also past chairman for their Labor Day Festival. Tom helped found the Knights of Columbus, St. Anthony, Fr. John A. Kenna Council #11430 and was co-founder of the Knights of Columbus, Council #7413, Erie, MI, where he was past Grand Knight and started the Bread Runs for their council. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Raisin River Assembly #0488, 4th Degree in Monroe, Michigan and Past District Deputy for the State of Michigan. Tom served as a member on the school board for Mason Consolidated Schools for 16 years and was former Athletic Director for St. Joseph Catholic School. He loved crossword puzzles, the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions, playing euchre, but most of all wanted to make the Earth a better place.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Flo. Children; Janice (Dennis) Seymour, Thomas (Faye) Hilkens, II, Carolyn (Bryan) Hanlon, Dale Hilkens and I. Marie Guna. Brothers, John (Nancy) Hilkens, Daniel Hilkens, and David (Doris) Hilkens. 14 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and 1 on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, William Hilkens, and sisters; Louise Hilkens and Lucille Riebe.
Visitation will be from 2-8 pm Monday, June 9, 2014, at the Michael W. Pawlak Funeral Home, 1640 Smith Rd. (at Jackman) Temperance, MI, where the Knights of Columbus, Council #7413 will pray the rosary Monday at 4:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at 11:00 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 2214 Manhattan Street, Erie, MI, where he will lie in state after 10:00 am. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph School or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
