LaVern “Bernie” H. Schmidt, 87, of Lambertville, MI and formerly of Riga, Michigan, died Friday, January 10, 2014 at Aspen Grove Assisted Living.  Born, June 1, 1926 in Whiteford Twp., MI, he was the son of Leon and Lula (Ellenwood) Schmidt.  A US Army veteran of WWII, he married Betty Jo Brown on June 18, 1947.  She preceded him in death on May 7, 2013.  Bernie was a heavy equipment operator working out of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 324 for over 30 years, retiring in 1990. Bernie and his late wife would spend their summers in Riga, MI and winters at Whisper Lake in Sebring, FL.

He is survived by his loving children, Paulla (Paul) Philabaum, Steve (Debbie) Schmidt and Philip (Hal Prue) Schmidt.  Sister, Charlene (Marv) Kastel, 5 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.  He was also preceded in death by a brother, Rolland Schmidt and sister, Lola Mae Rodgers.

Visitation will be from 3-8 pm Monday, January 13, 2014, at the Michael W. Pawlak Funeral Home, 1640 Smith Rd. (at Jackman) Temperance, MI, where funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 14, 2014, at 10:00 am.  Reverend Bruce Snyder, officiating.  Interment will follow at Whiteford Union Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to the Deacon’s Fund at Emmanuel Baptist Church or Promedica Hospice.  The family wished to thank the staff of Aspen Grove Assisted Living and Promedica Hospice for their loving care.  www.pawlakfuneralhome.com
